Lazio is found in central Italy, located on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It borders with Tuscany, Marches, Umbria, Abruzzi, Campania and Molise. In general, Lazio has a mild climate thanks to the influence of the Mediterranean Sea.
Lazio’s population accounts for about 9% of total Italian population with 5.205.139 inhabitants divided into the 5 provinces, Rome (the capital), and from the more populated to the least populated, Latina, Frosinone, Viterbo and Rieti, in their turn divided into 378 municipalities.
Lazio offers a variety of landscapes including lakes, mountains and sea… and a lot of chances from the point of view of tourism.
For those who want to discover Lazio history and origins throughout monuments, archaeological sites and ruins of ancient populations the region offers a wide range of possibilities.
Lazio also allows tourists to choose a different kind of tourism, discovering the oeno-gastronomic itineraries and showing the unique traditions and peculiarities of Lazio cooking style.
In addition to this, nature is another of the special features making our Region an ideal place for vacations and relax.
And, to conclude, Lazio hosts lots of events, fairs, exhibitions in the frame of entertainment in general, all initiatives are aimed at bettering tourist offer and making the Region attractive both to foreigners and Italian visitors.
The province of Rome has a surface of 5.353 Sq km, with 119 municipalities and a total of 3.849.487 inhabitants. The territory of the Province of Rome offers natural and historical beauties of primary importance and is characterized by its remarkable morphologic and geographic variety.
Its morphological structure can be divided in six areas, the city of Rome excluded.
North-West Area
This area starts from Fiumicino and arrives to the three wonderful villages situated on the Lake of Bracciano (Bracciano, Trevignano Romano and Anguillara Sabazia).
From the Tyrrhenian side we enter in the beautiful forests which cover the area of Mounts of the Tolfa and the Sabatini Mounts. At the end of the forests there is the crater which contains the Lake of Bracciano and, next to it, the small but suggestive Lake of Martignano. This area is the so-called Roman Tuscia.
Area of the Tiber Valley
It includes about 20 municipalities, almost all located along the Via Cassia, Via Flaminia, Via Salaria and Via Nomentana. The Tiber divides it in two different areas: the Etruscan-capenate area and the Latin countryside. The whole territory is characterized by wonderful landscapes. The natural reserves of Nazzano, Tiber, Farfa, the Park of Traja Valley and the Mount Soratte are all wonderful and evocative. From an archaeological point of view the Volusii Villa, the Locus Feroniae of Capena and the Archaeological Park of Veio are only some of the historical and cultural treasures of this area.
Tiburtino-Sublacense area
The most important towns of this area are Tivoli and Subiaco. The area is bounded by the Prenestina Area and the Lepini Mounts. Its territory of 1000 Sq Km includes 49 municipalities and is crossed by the river Aniene. The Aniene Valley is very suggestive. The Regional Park of the Lucretili and the Simbruini Mounts are very important. The landscape in general is characterized by the presence of hills rich in olive groves from the Hills of Tivoli until the Sabina area. The Southern part of the zone is rich in grapevines.
Prenestina and Lepini Mounts area
It is located between the Aniene Valley and the Colli Albani. It includes 17 municipalities, almost all crossed by the Via Prenestina and Via Casilina. This area is important for the presence of historical archaeological treasures (ruins of Rome and the Volsci, Castles and Palaces of the Middle-Age and Rinascimento).
Palestrina, beautiful city located at the beginning of the Valle del Sacco and Valle del Liri, is also famous because the composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was born there. Along the Via Casilina the village of Genazzano is placed on the slops of the Prenestini Mounts while Colleferro, in the valley of Lepini, is an industrial city.
Area of Castelli Romani
For sure it is the most known area of Rome, it includes 17 municipalities. It is located in the great and suggestive Volcano of Lazio. The two volcanic lakes of Castel Gandolfo and Nemi and the many green areas make the zone very evocative.
From an environmental point of view almost the all area is included in the Regional Park of Castelli Romani. In this territory there are many historical and archaeological treasures, eg.: the ancient village of Tuscolo, above Frascati, the square of the Bernini Fountains and the Chigi Palace in Ariccia and Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati.
Area of the southern coast
It is the smallest area and includes only four municipalities (Pomezia, Ardea, Anzio and Nettuno). It is bounded by the Province of Latina. There is a strong naturalist interest thanks to the presence of many green areas characterized by the Mediterranean scrub and of the Nature Reserve of Tor Caldara, known for its sulphur fumes. The historical and cultural interest is due to the ruins of a village which dates back to the Bronze Age and is situated in Ardea, to the ruins of the Imperial Palace of Anzio and to the famous Torre Astura near Nettuno.
