City of Trevignano
Trevignano lies on the northern shore of lake Bracciano or Sabatino. The lake is almost circular with a diameter of about 9 kilometres and is 170 metres deep in the centre. A sewage system and a strict control of the use of pesticides in the surrounding area make the water so clean that it acts as an emergency reservoir for Rome. For this reason motor boats are forbidden, making the lake ideal for sailing, canoeing and windsurfing.
A picturesque village on the northern shores of Lake Bracciano, about 40-50 kilometres north of Rome. It is built on a cliff at the end of a small bay, a secondary crater of an ancient volcano. There is a delightful small mediaeval quarter and a tree-lined lakeside road which stretches for about three kilometres with many bars and restaurants in sight of the lake.
Trevignano Romano in the so called "Tuscia romana" is an ideal centre for trips in a region of great tourist, artistic and natural interest. Apart from Rome (45 km), the following places of interest can be easily reached from Trevignano: Cerveteri (30 km), Bracciano (12 km), Sutri (12 km), Viterbo (45 km), Tarquinia (61 km), Tuscania (52 km), Caprarola (25 km), the hills of Tolfa and other attractive places.
This fortification of the Orsini family which was surrounded by a double wall extending as far as the lake, defended the village. It was destroyed in 1496 by Giovanni, Cesare Borgia's brother, during the war waged against the Orsini by Pope Alessandro VI Borgia who, however, did not succeed in taking Bracciano Castle.
The fortress is easily reached from the churchyard of the church of the Assumption. There is a delightful view looking over the roofs of Trevignano, the lake and the villages around it.
