Italian Maremma

If you really want to enjoy Maremma, just forget about your everyday life and relax. The area is extremely rich in interesting, evocative places: here is what we highly recommend you!

You can’t miss a visit to the Maremma Nature Park!

TALAMONE FORTRESS
Built on the top of the town hill during the Sienese domination (XVI c.), the Fortress is a four-sided building with mighty corner towers. It offers a breathtaking view of the neighbouring rocky coast, Argentario Promontory and the isles of the Tuscan Archipelago.

ETRUSCAN TEMPLE OF TALAMONACCIO
Legend has it that Talamone originated from an ancient Greek hero, Telamone, who landed here with the Argonauts in search for the Golden Fleech. The town of Talamone whose Etruscan name was Tlamu (Telamon for the Romans), lay on a low rocky promontory, overlooking the Argentario gulf, and extended between two hills, Bengodi and Talamonaccio. Its harbour was the most important in the area and represented the only source of goods for all the hinterland. Nowadays we have hardly any traces of the ancient town, save the gable of its Etruscan temple which is kept at the tourist information centre of Orbetello.

TALAMONE AQUARIUM
If you are interested in the underwater fauna and its delicate ecosystems, make a stop at the aquarium. You will discover the secrets of the neighbouring Orbetello lagoon and learn something more about this fascinating world.

MOUNT ARGENTARIO

Once an isle, the Argentario Promontory was later connected to the mainland by two narrow strips of land (tombolos), Giannella in the north and Feniglia in the south, which also delimited that sea area – the Orbetello lagoon – between Mount Argentario and the mainland. The Promontory is mainly characterised by a Mediterranean vegetation even though certain areas are cultivated (olive groves, vineyards, fruit trees). If you happen to visit the Argentario Promontory, you cannot miss the lovely coastal resorts of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole. Once a fishing village, Porto Santo Stefano is set like a precious stone in a picturesque northern inlet and is a ferry port for those going to the isles of Giglio and Giannutri. Situated in the south, Porto Ercole still bears witness of its Etruscan origins and is famous for its mighty fortifications, real masterpieces of architecture (Rocca, Forte Filippo, Forte S. Caterina, Forte Stella). We highly recommend you a walk along the harbour and through the ancient town.

ORBETELLO AND ITS LAGOON
Delimited by two strips of land (Feniglia and Giannella), once capital of the Spanish “Presidios”, Orbetello still bears witness of its past history with its city walls, Medina Coeli gate, Palace of Spain and Guzman powder magazine. Its cathedral dates 1376 and is in the typical late-Gothic style. But the main characteristic of Orbetello is its lagoon, a WWF area, populated most times by migratory birds.

ETRUSCAN AND MEDIEVAL TOWNS
Last but not least, if you are interested in Etruscan, Roman and Medieval history, you will have the chance to visit Sovana famous for its Tomb of Ilebrando, the town of Cosa in Ansedonia, Roselle, Saturnia, Vulci, Tarquinia, Pitigliano, Massa Marittima, Volterra etc.
